Derrick Lewis talks about his family more often than many UFC heavyweights. Not in a promotional sense or as part of a carefully planned media appearance. Their names simply come up in conversation.
For a man who built a public identity around chaos and one-liners, the domestic side of his life is surprisingly consistent and quietly serious. While fans know plenty about “The Black Beast” inside the Octagon, far less is known about the people closest to him.
Here is everything publicly known about his wife, April Davis, how the two of them ended up together, and the family life Lewis rarely discusses in detail.
Who is April Davis? Meet Derrick Lewis’ Wife
April Davis is primarily a homemaker and has been part of Lewis’ life since long before his UFC success. She was there during the years when he worked as a tow truck driver for AAA and before mixed martial arts became a full-time career.
Beyond that, very little information about her personal life is available publicly. Her date of birth has never been confirmed, and neither she nor Lewis has spoken publicly about her upbringing, education, or family background. Unlike many spouses of high-profile athletes, April has largely stayed away from the spotlight.
Although she has attended several of Lewis’ fights over the years, supporting “The Black Beast,” she has never sought public attention for herself. Most details of her life remain private, and she has given very few media interviews, aside from occasional appearances alongside her husband.
How Did Derrick Lewis and April Davis Meet?
The first introduction between Derrick Lewis and April Davis came through Lewis’s cousin Kendrick, who set up a phone conversation between them.
Speaking in a UFC interview, she recalled that Lewis immediately told her to look at his MySpace profile picture before joking about how dark-skinned he was.
Kendrick introduced me and Derrick. So, we initially talked on the phone. When I first talked to Derrick on the phone, he told me to look at his MySpace seconds picture and he was just telling he was like, “I’m really black.” So, I was like, “Okay.” (Timestamp: 0:29-0:53)
That was the opening line. A request to check a MySpace photo and a self-description left April visibly amused and confused, but she went along with it. The following day, Lewis appeared at her house despite the fact that she had never given him her address.
Recalling the moment, April said:
“The next day he just showed up at my house. I didn’t tell him where I lived. So yeah.”
Lewis’ explanation for showing up was characteristically simple:
“She was looking all good.”
The two stayed in contact after that, spent time as friends before things progressed into a relationship, and eventually got serious. They ultimately married in 2017.
Derrick Lewis and April Davis’ Wedding: When and Where Derrick and April got Married?
Lewis and April tied the knot on June 17, 2017, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The ceremony was kept almost entirely private. The couple has never released wedding photographs, discussed the guest list, or shared details about the event. For someone with millions of followers across social media, Lewis has consistently kept major family milestones away from public view.
As of 2026, the couple has been married for nearly nine years. In that time, Lewis has fought for a UFC title, set the all-time knockout record in the promotion, gone through losing streaks, and come back from them. Through it all, Davis has remained a constant presence behind the scenes.
Speaking to ESPN, April reflected on Lewis’ journey from working for AAA to becoming one of the UFC’s biggest stars:
“I’m very proud of him we’ve been together 13 years so I’ve seen him you know he was a AAA truck driver. I’m so excited and proud of him to see how far he’s gotten in his career.”
Derrick Lewis’ Kids: How Many Children Do Lewis and April Have?
Lewis and Davis have three children together: two sons and one daughter.
That is the extent of the publicly available information. The couple has never revealed their children’s names, and their ages have not been publicly confirmed.
Lewis has kept every detail about his children off the record since they were born. He has stated previously that he does not want them exposed to the attention that comes with his career, and he has even suggested that his children do not know much about his fame as a UFC fighter.
For a man who holds the record for the most knockout victories in UFC history, that level of privacy is notable. It appears to be a deliberate choice shaped by his own upbringing and his desire to provide a different environment for his family.
Lewis mentioned before one of his fights that he was being more careful about what he said publicly because he was a father and did not want to set a bad example.
During an interview with MMA Junkie, the UFC heavyweight explained that his priorities changed once he became a father:
“It’s all on my kids, you know they depend on me, and I want them better life than I grow up, you know. It’s really all about my kids, its not about me anymore. I had my chance, I sc*ewed things so it’s all, all it is for my kids.”
Is April Davis on Social Media?
April Davis maintains an extremely limited public presence online. She does not have a widely known public Instagram account, does not maintain an active presence on X/Twitter, and appears only occasionally in content posted by Lewis despite him having well over two million followers on Instagram at @thebeastufc.
Lewis posts family content occasionally but keeps his children’s faces out of it. April appears only rarely in public-facing content, and the family has remained largely separate from the public side of Lewis’ career.
“The Black Beast” has protected that choice without ever making a point of explaining it. He posts his KOs, training clips, and locker room content, but the family stays separate. Given where he came from and what he has said about wanting to shield his kids from the weight of his public profile, the decision is not hard to understand.
