Sean O’Malley has spent years building one of the most recognizable personal brands in UFC history. The former Bantamweight Champion has a unique persona compared to other UFC stars. The colorful hair, knockouts, and merchandise – every piece of it has been deliberate, and every piece of it has worked.
But behind all of that, before any of it existed, there was a woman in Arizona who believed in him and let a broke prospect with no profile of success move into her house while she built her own business from scratch. Danya Gonzalez was there by O’Malley’s side before he stood on the podium of fame. She was there through the climb, and at every significant moment since.
In this article, let’s deep dive into the relationship between Sean O’Malley and Danya Gonzalez.
Meet Sean O’Malley’s Wife: Danya Gonzalez
Danya Gonzalez was born in 1991 in Arizona. She is 3 years older than Sean O’Malley. While Suga Sean traveled across the globe for UFC Events, Arizona has always been home for Danya. She was born and brought up in the state, built her career there, and launched a successful business.
Long before fans knew her as O’Malley’s wife, Danya was making a name for herself in the beauty industry. After earning her cosmetology degree from The Cutting Edge in 2011, she worked her way through several well-known Arizona salons, including Dolce Salon and Spa, Beauty District, and Icon Hair Architecture.
In 2019, she launched Hairapy by Danya, a salon and boutique in Scottsdale. As of today, she has over 24,000 followers on Instagram.
There’s another side to Danya that many may not know about. Outside of running her business, she has also reportedly competed in jiu-jitsu and trained in MMA. She did not come into O’Malley’s world as an outsider learning the language of combat sports for the first time.
How Did Sean O’Malley and Danya Gonzalez Meet?
O’Malley was 19 or 20 when he first crossed paths with Danya Gonzalez at Tim Welch’s gym in Phoenix. The introduction did not happen organically. At first, Danya thought Sugar was very young because of his boyish appearance. It was Suga Sean’s coach, Tim Welch, who pointed him toward Danya and suggested him to go and talk to her.
The former Bantamweight Champion narrated the story himself on the ‘Suga Show.”
“I met her at the UFC gym. Danya and her sister are walking out, and he’s like (pointing to Tim Welch), ‘come on, go ask her for her Instagram. I get both of their Instagram and the rest is history.”
After that first meeting, they started talking, became close friends first, and the relationship developed from there. O’Malley started living with Danya in her apartment, and they used to split bills and expenses. At one point, Danya’s friend even told her that ‘Suga’ was using her, but she didn’t budge. She believed in O’Malley and supported her. That faith eventually paid off, as today O’Malley is one of the biggest names in MMA.
Sean O’Malley and Danya’s Children: Elena and Mateo
As of today, Sean O’Malley has two children with his wife, Danya Gonzalez. An elder daughter named Elena and a son, Mateo.
For O’Malley, fatherhood was never an afterthought. Years before he became one of the UFC’s biggest stars, he already knew he wanted to be a dad. He once revealed that he was so certain about it in eighth grade that he ended a young relationship after learning the girl didn’t want kids someday.
Sean O’Malley and Dayna welcomed their first child, a daughter named Elena, in December 2020. O’Malley was still building toward the upper ranks of the UFC bantamweight division at that point. He was blessed with Elena before the big money and before the belt.
On a podcast with Randall Kaplan, Suga opened up on having kids:
“I’ve always wanted kids I remember wanting kids when I was like in Middle School thinking I remember breaking up with a girl I think I was like in eighth grade because she didn’t want kids like I was like I can’t be with you I want I wanted to have kids.” (Timestamp: 20:20-20:28)
Their son Mateo was born just weeks before UFC 316 in June 2025. O’Malley walked into that fight as a new father of two, with his own father in his corner for the first time, and a different walkout song playing for the first time in his UFC career. He lost by third-round submission to Merab Dvalishvili. The fight was the lowest point of his UFC run.
