Floyd Mayweather Jr. may no longer be fighting professionally, but his opinions still carry weight across the boxing world. The undefeated boxing legend officially hung his gloves in August 2017 with a professional record of 50 wins and 0 losses (50-0), including 27 knockouts. He still remains a massive figure in the fight game, commanding attention years after his official retirement.
During a recent appearance on the “Come And Talk 2 Me” podcast with rapper Cam’ron, the boxing legend discussed the current state of the sport and named his favorite active fighters.
He listed a few elite champions, but he also threw significant praise toward Jake Paul. He commended the younger Paul brother for his business savvy and promotional skills. The mood shifted just seconds later. When pressed about the long-standing financial dispute with Logan Paul, Mayweather gave a quick, evasive answer and moved on.
The podcast host asked Mayweather to name his top three active fighters. Mayweather struggled to limit his list to just three names. He highlighted David Benavidez, Keyshawn Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, and Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue. He then pivoted to the influencer boxing scene. Mayweather explicitly stated he had to take his hat off to Jake Paul. He expressed genuine respect for El Gallo’s ability to market himself and generate heavy revenue.
I got to take my head off to Jake Paul cuz I like Jake Paul Hustle, right? All in all, Jake Paul, he popped that sh*t. He know how to hustle and he know how to get that back. So, and so his hustle is I mean, he he a white boy, but his hustle is like a a black dude from the hood.” Mayweather explained during the interview. (Timestamp: 20:34:20:51)
He noted that Jake talks big but knows exactly how to back it up financially. Mayweather compared Jake’s promotional grind to a street-smart kid from the hood, an endorsement that carries heavy weight coming from a man nicknamed “Money.”
Jake Paul has built a massive brand by disrupting the standard boxing model, and Mayweather clearly respects that. He values anyone who can command millions of dollars without needing a legacy promoter backing them.
The praise for the Paul family stopped there. The interviewer quickly shifted gears and brought up Logan Paul. For years, Logan has publicly accused Mayweather of withholding millions of dollars from their June 2021 exhibition bout in Miami. Logan has threatened legal action multiple times. He claims he was only paid a fraction of his guaranteed purse for the Showtime pay-per-view event. The interviewer asked Mayweather directly how he responds to Logan’s claims of unpaid money. Mayweather completely dismissed the question.
“I mean, I wish them nothing but the best,” Mayweather replied, instantly shutting down the topic [20:58]. He refused to elaborate on the contract dispute or address the specific allegations of funds. Instead, he immediately pushed the conversation to the next question about Devin Haney and Rolando Romero. The abrupt dismissal leaves no doubt about his lack of interest in entertaining the drama.
This contrast highlights the different relationships Floyd Mayweather has with the Paul brothers. While the boxing legend avoided discussing his financial dispute with Logan Paul, Mayweather had no hesitation in praising Jake Paul’s rise in boxing.
Most recently, Jake Paul’s promotion, MVP, headlined its first MMA card, featuring Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano on Netflix, which averaged 12.4 million global viewers and peaked at nearly 17 million during the main event, with the promotion also saying it became the most-watched MMA event in U.S. history.
Mayweather’s comments suggest he respects what Jake has built as a businessman and promoter, even if he had little interest in revisiting the lingering controversy surrounding Logan Paul’s payment claims.
