The Ultimate Fighting Championship is staging its biggest card of the year with UFC Freedom 250. It takes place on the South Lawn of the White House. The event is packed with high-stakes matches.
Undefeated Ilia Topuria puts his lightweight title on the line against Justin Gaethje. Two-division champ Alex Pereira faces Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight belt. But the actual fights, however, might take a back seat to the weather forecast.
The weather forecast remains a concern heading into the event. According to The Weather Channel, the Washington, D.C. area faces a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms accompanied by wind gusts reaching 34 mph.
Beyond the rain, high humidity is also expected to drive the heat index above three digits. The Weather Channel forecast also noted that fighters will have to compete while dealing with “massive swarms of mosquitoes and gnats” inside the cage.
While the weather may be harsh, UFC CEO Dana White has no intention of backing out from the historic event. Speaking at Thursday’s press conference,
White guaranteed that UFC Freedom 250 would proceed as scheduled despite the challenging conditions. In response to one of the questions, he replied:
I don’t care if it rains snows, whatever happens we have a fight. I’m sick of hearing about the weather. We are fighting on sunday on The White House Lawn”
The UFC has spent months preparing for the unique challenges that come with hosting an event on the White House lawn. Still, weather conditions remain the one factor beyond the promotion’s control as fighters prepare to make history in Washington, D.C.
How UFC Freedom 250 Has Prepared for Severe Weather, Mosquitoes, and Gnat Swarms
The UFC has taken extensive precautions to ensure the event proceeds despite the challenging weather forecast. The promotion constructed a 92-foot overhang to keep the cage dry if rain and storms hit. The massive $60 million structure is referred to as ‘The Claw’.
Ultimate Fighting Championship executive producer Craig Borsari hired an on-site meteorologist for hourly assessments and confirmed the crew has backup canvases ready to deploy if the mat gets slick.
Even with that protection, safety rules require an automatic 30-minute freeze of the broadcast if a single lightning strike occurs within eight miles of the venue.
While Dana White remains adamant that UFC Freedom 250 will proceed as scheduled, However, the weather remains the one factor the UFC cannot control. If lightning moves within the designated safety radius, officials will have no choice but to temporarily halt the event.
