UFC Legend Jose Aldo Surprises The Rock With a Gift at Brazil’s Moana Event

Despite becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest names, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has never lost his connection to combat sports. That connection was on full display during a recent appearance at Ilha Fiscal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Great One recently attended a promotional event for Moana, where he shared an unexpected moment of mutual respect with former UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo.

Aldo brought his son and daughter to meet The Rock during the media tour, and despite his status as a UFC Hall of Famer and arguably the greatest 145-pound fighter in mixed martial arts history, the “King of Rio” approached the actor with humility.

Aldo assumed the WWE legend might not recognize him, so he walked up to Johnson, initiated a handshake, and offered a brief introduction.

Hi, how are you? I have one gift for you. I am former UFC Featherweight Champion,” Aldo said.

Johnson cut him off immediately and said, “I know you,” shutting down the idea that Aldo needed to explain his resume. Aldo seemed genuinely surprised by the recognition. He responded with a quick, “Yeah? Thank you, buddy. This is a present for you.”

Jose Aldo then handed over the gift. While the exact item is difficult to make out in the available video footage, a close look suggests it is a small display card featuring a photo of a fighter with championship belts.

This makes sense given Aldo’s extensive hardware collection, which includes both the WEC and UFC Featherweight straps from his dominant run. Johnson was visibly thrilled with the gesture.

Oh my God! Beautiful man! Thank you so much,” Johnson said.

The actor then revealed a highly coincidental connection from a press junket earlier in the day. “I was just talking about you,” Johnson told the Brazilian star. “Because they were asking me today who your favorite UFC fighter is. I said Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo.”

Getting named alongside Silva, another Brazilian MMA icon and former long-reigning Middleweight king, clearly resonated with Aldo. Both men dominated their respective weight classes during the UFC’s massive international expansion in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Before posing for photos with Johnson and his children, Aldo made sure to praise Johnson’s recent work in the MMA sphere. “Hey, the last movie, The Smashing Machine, it was so amazing, buddy,” Aldo told him.

Johnson thanked Aldo before posing for several pictures with the former champion and his family. After the event, Aldo shared a carousel of images from the Moana premiere on his official Instagram, including his meeting with The Rock.

In the caption, he thanked the Hollywood star for the warm interaction, writing, “Nothing but good vibes and the honor of running into @therock. Thanks for the kindness!” (translated from Portuguese). Aldo also praised the film, calling Moana “10 out of 10” after attending the premiere with his family at Disney Brazil’s invitation.

The Rock Has Never Hidden His Admiration for Mixed Martial Arts

Dwayne Johnson remains one of the most visible crossover figures in mixed martial arts. Long before his Project Rock footwear became the official shoe of the UFC, the professional wrestling icon paid close attention to the Octagon. He frequently uses his massive platform to highlight the sport’s biggest names.

Johnson actually considered a career in Pride FC back in 1997 but decided against it, noting the massive pay disparity at the time compared to his rising WWE status.

However, his respect for the fighters never faded. That fandom was fully televised at UFC 244 inside Madison Square Garden. The promotion brought Johnson in specifically to wrap the inaugural BMF Championship around Jorge Masvidal’s waist after his victory over Nate Diaz.

His connection to the sport goes much deeper than promotional appearances. The Great One recently wrapped production on The Smashing Machine, a biographical film detailing the chaotic life of early MMA pioneer Mark Kerr.

The project required Johnson to undergo intense MMA training to replicate the brutal realities of late-90s no-holds-barred competition.

Whether he’s sitting cageside at a major event or portraying a combat sports legend on the big screen, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson continues to show that his passion for mixed martial arts is genuine.
