“He’s Homeless”- Dustin Poirier Opens Up About His Father

Dustin Poirier spent two decades building one of the most respected careers in MMA. He won the UFC Interim Lightweight Championship and shared the Octagon with greats like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, and Justin Gaethje. Now, the 37-year-old is facing a completely different challenge outside the Octagon.

The Diamond officially retired on July 19 after a final bout against Max Holloway in his home state of Louisiana. Stepping away at age 36 was influenced heavily by his desire to preserve his neurological health. However, the transition into civilian life exposed underlying emotional hurdles. Without the strict regimen of a UFC training camp, the retired fighter struggled to find a replacement for that daily purpose.

During a recent appearance on “The Diary Of A CEO” podcast with Steven Bartlett, Poirier disclosed the heavy emotional toll of his family dynamic. He opened up that his father is currently homeless and struggling with a lifelong battle against severe alcoholism.

He had his own struggles with alcohol. Alcohol has ruined his life..He has been alcoholic my entire life,” The Diamond said. (Timestamp: 6:31-6:50)

Poirier did not grow up in the same house as his dad. His parents divorced when he was in kindergarten. From that point forward, his mother and grandmother raised him in Lafayette. He spent alternating weekends with his father, but the relationship was consistently fractured by addiction.

According to Dustin, his father’s reliance on alcohol destroyed multiple marriages and alienated him from most of his children. That distance remained a constant factor throughout Poirier’s rise to UFC stardom. The 37-year-old noted that his father derailed his own life through continuous substance abuse.

The situation reached a boiling point on Father’s Day. Poirier was navigating an Atlanta airport for a multi-leg business trip. Despite spending a positive morning with his own children, a massive wave of depression hit him. His mind locked onto his 74-year-old father’s current living conditions. His dad is living on the streets, currently sleeping in a pickup truck given to him by Poirier’s sister.

It’s Father’s Day and I felt good in the morning. I spent the morning with my kids, but then as I was traveling to work, I felt that feeling again. It’s like a cloud in my head. I was angry at the world and I just couldn’t stop thinking about my father. And when I think about your earliest contacts, you got a father that’s an alcoholic, violence in the home, and your mom said that you were an alcoholic kid.. I just couldn’t stop thinking about my father and I started drinking in the airport and that’s kind of what led to the incident. It’s just But when I feel like And I drank anyway. So, you know, not that my father anything’s an excuse. (Timestamp: 0:11-12:20)

Overwhelmed by his father’s refusal to accept help, Poirier broke his own sobriety. He began drinking at an airport bar, leading to an altercation with gate agents and law enforcement. Police arrested him for public intoxication. Poirier spent the afternoon in a holding cell before being released on bond. He immediately returned home to Louisiana and canceled his media obligations.

He owned his mistake entirely. Poirier refused to use his mental health or his father’s status to justify the arrest and, later, also posted an emotional story on his official Instagram seeking help.

Im at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn’t been easy on me and alcohol isn’t the answer. It has ruined my father’s life and I will not allow it to ruin mine, my family deserve me at 100%. I’m trying to do everything I can to get my mind right and take the right next steps,” Poirier wrote.

He also took immediate action upon returning home, filing an Order of Protective Custody to force medical intervention for his father. Authorities located the older man, but because he appeared lucid during the evaluation, they legally had to release him back to the streets.

The 37-year-old is now dealing with the professional and personal fallout. He lost at least one major corporate sponsor due to the arrest. To ensure this never happens again, he committed to total sobriety. He re-entered therapy and deleted all social media applications from his phone. Moving forward, Poirier is focusing solely on his wife, his children, and navigating the complex reality of a parent who refuses rehabilitation.
